Chapter 494: Let's Renovate - Part 2

(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)

After that, we had several discussions with everyone, gathered our ideas…

Then we consulted with Mr. Von, drafted up blueprints a few times…

And finally, the day came for the renovation work to begin.
We all pitched in under Mr. Von’s direction and got started on the construction work.

"Hey hey, Mr. Von. Where do you want this log?"

"Please stack that around the back of the house. Ms. Sora and Ms. Luna should be cutting it down to the right size with magic."

"For now, I brought those big stones you asked for, but… what do we do with them?"

"Those will be the foundation of the new extension. Please work with Ms. Rifa to place them. Ah, here’s the blueprint."

"Got it. Let’s go, Rifa."

"Aye aye, sir!"

Kanade and Tania showed off their strength.
Sora and Luna used their magic.
Everyone used the skills they had to keep the construction moving forward.

"Heave… ho!"

"I-Is this… okay!? Is it in the right position!?"

Even Nina and Finia were carrying lumber.
From their appearance, you tended to forget, but they were also among the strongest species — maybe not quite as strong as Kanade, but still far stronger than an ordinary human.
So carrying smaller pieces of lumber was no problem for them.

"Hmm… just a little to the left. Can you adjust it?"

"On it!"

Tina, in her doll form, slipped into the gap to check how it fit…
Then Sakura used her head (literally) and adjusted the position of the lumber.
They were a perfect combination.

"…This is something else…"

"What’s the matter, Mr. Von?"

"Ah… at first, I assumed this would be work for professional craftsmen only, and estimated about a month for the job… but I never expected everyone to be this capable. At this rate… it might only take a week… no, maybe just a few days."

"Ahaha… I’m a little surprised too," I admitted.

When you hear “strongest species,” you tend to only think about combat abilities…
But they could accomplish so much outside of combat too.
It was a surprising discovery.

"Everyone’s so dependable."

Not just in battle — even outside of it, I really relied on them.
When things were hard, or I felt lonely…
They’d quietly stay by my side.

They were very precious companions.

"Everyone seems to really adore you, Mr. Rain."

"Huh?"

"Just looking at them, you can tell — they trust you completely, without even a hint of doubt. To have forged such a bond… I’m honestly envious."

"Ah, ahh… I see."

At first, I thought he was talking about romance or something.

"Well then. We can’t let them outshine us — we have to do our part too."

With renewed determination, Mr. Von gathered the craftsmen and started work on another area.

I decided I’d better do my best too.
While giving instructions, I helped out wherever I could and kept the work moving.

"I wonder how things are going in the back?"

We planned to dig out a space for a basement back there, then build an extension and add a rooftop.
But first, we had to dig a huge hole — the toughest part of this whole renovation.

Sakura and Rifa were in charge of that, and by now they should already have started.
I figured I’d better check on them to make sure there weren’t any problems.

With that thought, I went around to the back of the house…

"Onnn! Grrrrr! Oooooonnnn!!!"

"Yes, right there. Dig together with Sakura."

"…"

And I was left speechless at the sight of the enormous hole that had already been dug.

Sakura was furiously digging into the earth…
and one of the giant wolves that served as Rifa’s familiars was also clawing out dirt alongside her.

A massive hole.
And an equally massive pile of dirt.

"Oh, Rain. Mornin’~"

I was greeted with some weird greeting.
Had she learned that from one of the craftsmen…?

"What’s up?"

"I just came to check on things… wait, wasn’t Rifa working on the foundation a little while ago?"

"Yeah. We finished that earlier."

"So now… you started digging the basement?"

"Yup. Sakura’s giving it her all."

"Still… this is…"

It was astounding.

It looked like the work was almost completely finished already.

To have dug such a huge hole in just a matter of tens of minutes…
Once again, I felt like I’d been shown just how ridiculous the abilities of the strongest species really were.

"Hey, Sakura. That’s good enough — you can stop digging there. The craftsmen will handle the fine details, so you’ve already done more than enough."

"Oph!"

When I called out to her, Sakura stopped digging and came over to me.

She sat down in front of me and stared up at me.

I did my best.
I did good? Good?

I could almost hear the voice of her heart saying that… or so it felt.

"Good girl, good girl. You really did a great job. That was amazing."

"Ophuuu~"

As I patted her head, her tail started wagging side to side with incredible force.

"Good girl, good girl."

Rifa joined in, patting her too.
Sakura’s tail wagged even more vigorously…

"…Sakura."

"Off!?"

A cloud of dust swirled up, and Iris, who was caught right in it, glared at her with a deadpan look.

"I understand how happy you must be to be praised by Lord Rain and Lady Rifa… but let’s not overdo it, shall we? Otherwise… fufu…"

"Kyuuun…"

At Iris’s menacing little smile, Sakura shrank down, hugging her tail between her legs and making herself small in fear.
