Chapter 185 My First Summer Vacation

(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)

Homeroom teacher Murai-sensei, impeccably dressed in a neatly tailored suit, gave his closing ceremony speech from the podium with the same expressionless face as always.

"Summer vacation finally begins tomorrow. It's a long break, so make sure to stay safe and healthy."

After delivering the usual stock phrase, he continued in a businesslike tone:

"If you discover a Gate, your entire party will be promoted to a higher class. And if you're aiming for an even higher-ranked class, don't focus solely on dungeon exploration—make sure to keep up with your studies as well."

Having said that, he promptly left the classroom.

This would be the first summer vacation of our lives at Adventurer High School. During the break, a special incentive had been added: if a party discovered a new Gate, every member would be promoted to a higher class unconditionally.

My classmates were fired up, declaring that they would spend every day of the vacation searching and absolutely earn a promotion. But finding a Gate alone was extremely inefficient. The real challenge was deciding who to form a party with and how best to sell yourself as a valuable teammate. Serious negotiations had already begun throughout the classroom, with students subtly gathering information and reading one another's expressions.

However, class promotion at Adventurer School wasn't determined solely by dungeon performance evaluations. Academic examinations carried a surprisingly large weight as well. That was why Murai-sensei had warned us that anyone hoping to reach the higher classes would have a difficult time unless they studied diligently on a daily basis.

Since I had graduated from university in my previous world, my basic academic abilities were holding up for now—but the key phrase was "for now."

From what I'd heard, Adventurer School ranked among the most academically demanding high schools in Japan. Compared to the school I attended before, the difficulty level of the tests was on an entirely different level. Despite us only being first-year students, they casually expected us to solve entrance exam questions from elite universities. Just keeping up was exhausting.

Even if Butao had enrolled here because he wanted to attend the same school as his childhood friend, I had to give him credit for actually getting accepted. He must have worked incredibly hard. At the same time, it reminded me just how deeply he had cared about that childhood friend.

Putting that aside, the long-awaited summer vacation would finally begin tomorrow.

Back when I first enrolled, my plan had been simple. Reach Level 10 by this point, dive into dungeons, get close to a cute heroine—preferably Student Council President Sera-san—and, while forming a party together, enjoy some sweet romantic moments under the summer night sky.

Reality, however, had been nothing like that.

Kaworu, the heroine closest to me, looked at me with cold eyes. Triggering any sort of youthful romance event with the other heroines had proven completely impossible. Meanwhile, in this short period alone, I'd lost count of how many times I'd nearly died. Memories of my arm being blown off, holes being punched through my stomach, and countless life-or-death situations flashed through my mind like scenes from a funeral lantern.

If the environment had gradually become harsher as the game approached its final chapters, I could have accepted that.

Instead, barely after enrolling, crises that mocked the game's balance had come charging at me one after another. I wanted to grab whoever was responsible for this world and demand an explanation.

And on top of that, the game's story itself was beginning to go off the rails.

In DunEx, around this point—the start of the first summer vacation—an event was supposed to occur where E-Class and D-Class entered all-out war. Yet now, on the final day after school, there wasn't the slightest sign of them making a move.

Even Isamu Kariya, the leader of D-Class, had remained quiet the entire time.

Maybe the predetermined school events simply weren't going to happen anymore.

The original game had carefully arranged its events so that Akagi-kun and Pink-chan could grow step by step. If those events never occurred, they wouldn't develop properly. And if that happened, the brutal events waiting further down the line would become impossible to handle.

The future looked very bleak indeed.

How had things ended up like this?

I couldn't think of any explanation that completely satisfied me, but if I had to guess, a series of small incidents had snowballed through the butterfly effect into something far larger.

Another complication was that I wasn't the only player in this world.

Tsukishima was currently leaning against the wall by the window, chatting casually with classmates, but there was no telling what he might be plotting behind the scenes. If he happened to be doing anything suspicious with Sera-san, I would have to stop him immediately. I couldn't afford to let my guard down.

Still, the story diverging from the game's original path wasn't entirely a bad thing.

At the center of the classroom stood Satsuki, the braided-haired girl, smiling as she responded to the classmates gathered around her.

In the original story, she would have suffered severe oppression and violence from the upper classes. A few months later, even her own classmates would betray her, ultimately driving her out of school.

But now she had become someone capable of leading the entire class.

Risa was standing beside her.

And I was here too.

That tragedy would never happen again.

The future might become worse in some ways, but it could improve in others as well.

Maybe an incredible adventurer beyond even my expectations would emerge from this very E-Class.

With such thoughts in mind, I watched the lively classroom after school when a conversation among several girls looking at their wrist terminals caught my attention.

"Hey, look at this. He's ridiculously handsome."

"You're right. He might actually be my type. He's in E-Class too, so maybe we could form a party together—"

"No way. Even if he's a dropout, he's still a Viscount, you know?"

They were talking about a noble who had transferred into Second-Year E-Class just before summer vacation.

I'd heard rumors about him before, but I hadn't expected him to actually show up.

Transferring into Adventurer School midway through the year was supposed to be extremely difficult. Most likely, he had used noble privileges to force the issue.

Still, I had no knowledge of such a transfer event from the game.

Maybe it had happened behind the scenes in DunEx but simply wasn't relevant to the main story.

Either way, I had no intention of associating with some arrogant noble who used privilege to bend the rules. It had nothing to do with me.

As I yawned, tears forming in my eyes while feeling sorry for the students of Second-Year E-Class, two people approached.

Looking up, I saw Kaworu, my childhood friend, who had recently started offering me awkward but genuine smiles.

"Sorry to keep you waiting. It looks like they're ready now... Shall we go together?"

"Narumi, we'll be in your care today."

Behind her stood Naoto Tachigi, the strategist of the protagonist's party, adjusting his glasses with his middle finger as he greeted me.

The three of us had plans today.

Originally Akagi-kun and Pink-chan were supposed to come as well, but apparently they had urgent business at the Adventurers' Guild and couldn't make it.

Thinking I should at least stand up and return the greeting, I rose from my chair—

Only for a large male student to suddenly cut in between us.

It was Hiroto Majima.

Not only that, but his face was twisted with hostility.

No, hostility wasn't strong enough.

He looked ready to kill someone.

Before I could even ask what was wrong, he grabbed me by the collar.

"Hey, you. Come with me."

"Stop being so rough. If you have something to say, say it here."

Kaworu immediately stepped between us.

Ignoring her completely, Majima glared at me.

"You're coming with me. No excuses."

Then he walked out of the classroom.

The tense exchange drew the attention of everyone around us.

I had absolutely no idea what this was about, but ignoring him would only make things worse.

Resigning myself to my fate, I let out a huge sigh internally and started to say, "I'll be back in a bit," when someone stopped me.

"I'm coming too. I can't just stand by and watch violence happen."

"Then I'll come as well. I don't think I can honestly say this has nothing to do with me."

Kaworu's participation made sense—she hated conflict among friends.

But even Tachigi-kun was coming.

Judging from his expression, he seemed to have some idea what this was about.

I'd been looking forward to going out in a good mood today.

Things never seemed to go smoothly.

Following behind the long-striding Majima-kun, our little group trudged onward.

We turned several corners, left the school building, and continued walking.

Our destination turned out to be the rear side of Adventurer School.

Several old pipes protruded from the concrete walls, and even the voices coming from the athletic field had faded into distant whispers carried by the wind.

Coming all the way out here, where nobody was around, suggested this was something he didn't want anyone else overhearing.

Standing before us, Majima planted himself firmly on the ground with his arms crossed, looking down at me.

When he noticed Kaworu and Tachigi standing behind me, his eyebrow twitched and he clicked his tongue loudly.

His irritation only seemed to grow as he finally spoke.

"I'll get straight to the point. This is about the expedition party Omiya and Nitta are organizing. Fine, I can accept Hayase, Tachigi, Akagi, and the others being selected. But why the hell is a worthless pig like you included while I'm not?"

"The expedition party? That was Omiya-san's decision— Stop!"

Because he looked ready to throw a punch at any moment, his fists clenched tightly in rage, Kaworu answered on my behalf.

However, that seemed to irritate Majima-kun even more. He forcefully grabbed my collar and tried to lift me up.

Kaworu hurriedly stepped in to stop him, but we were outside the Magic Field. Without physical enhancement, it was difficult for her to restrain a large, muscular high school boy. Then again, even for Majima-kun, lifting a fat guy like me with one hand wasn't easy. Still, he stubbornly poured strength into his arm and glared at me.

"I heard Tenma-sama is joining too. A commoner bottom-feeder like you gets to go, but somehow a samurai-class noble like me gets left out? Give me an answer that actually makes sense!"

"Majima, that's enough. Narumi wasn't the one who decided this."

As he tightened his grip even further, I began choking. Seeing that, Tachigi-kun stepped in and managed to pry him away from me.

That was a close one.

If possible, I'd like to settle this peacefully, but Majima-kun's anger didn't seem likely to fade anytime soon.

First, let's organize the situation.

What exactly was this expedition party?

It was probably the party we had planned for the summer vacation in order to train and strengthen Akagi-kun and Pink-chan, with Kaworu and Tachigi-kun joining as well.

Satsuki was officially listed as the representative, but I was the one who came up with the plan. Naturally, I intended to accompany them into the dungeon and support everything from behind the scenes.

So Tachigi-kun's statement that "Narumi wasn't the one who decided this" wasn't actually true.

In reality, almost every aspect of the plan had been arranged by me.

Of course, there was no way I could say, "I'm the mastermind behind all of this."

While I was wondering how to handle the situation, Majima-kun suddenly proposed something absurd.

A duel.

Specifically, he wanted to settle the matter of the expedition party's membership right here and now.

The reason he wanted to duel outside the Magic Field was apparently his own version of mercy—a handicap that prevented either of us from using physical enhancement.

Kaworu immediately protested against such a one-sided declaration.

"Even if you did that, Omiya-san and Nitta-san wouldn't approve."

"But protecting Tenma-sama requires the strongest companions possible. In other words, I'm clearly the better choice. If something happens to a noble lady, Hayase, can you take responsibility?"

The training plan existed primarily to break a curse, and part of it involved having Tenma-san accompany Akagi-kun into the dungeon so they could deepen their relationship.

Against that, Majima-kun kept insisting:

"What if something happens to Tenma-sama?"

"I'll protect her."

But none of that was necessary.

Tenma-san was constantly guarded by an armed group known as the Black Butlers.

Unless they were facing a massive raid clan on the scale of the Ten Rakshashas, they could easily repel any threat.

The situation Majima-kun feared simply wasn't going to happen.

So even when he lowered his center of gravity and assumed a fighting stance, I had no intention of accepting a duel.

Nor did I intend to leave the expedition party.

(That said, maybe I do share some of the blame.)

The lowest-ranked student in the class—me—had been selected as a member.

Meanwhile, Majima-kun, whom everyone regarded as one of the strongest students in E-Class, had been excluded.

Adding to that, Tenma-san was participating as well, yet a samurai-class noble whose role was to protect nobles wasn't included.

That had apparently dealt a severe blow to his pride.

Maybe I really was partly responsible for angering him this much.

If so...

"I don't plan on dueling you, but how about I personally recommend that you be added to the party?"

"You? Do you even have that kind of authority?"

If he wanted to join that badly, I honestly didn't see the problem.

Besides, I had high hopes for Majima-kun.

In DunEx, he had ended up overshadowed by Akagi-kun and never achieved particularly remarkable results. But his determination to become stronger than anyone else in the class was unmatched.

The way he pursued strength with relentless discipline reminded me a lot of Kaworu.

Even setting aside his hostility toward me, I couldn't help wanting to support someone who worked that hard.

With that in mind, I told him:

"I'll talk to Satsuki about it."

Yet all I received in return was a suspicious stare.

Apparently, he believed that Satsuki and Risa hadn't included me because of my abilities at all.

According to him, I was only there to handle miscellaneous chores.

Now hold on.

Sure, I entered school as the lowest-ranked student.

Sure, I still had a belly and looked weak.

But when I got serious, I was actually pretty impressive—

Or at least, that's what I wanted to say.

Unfortunately, without showing any of my abilities, I couldn't make the claim sound convincing.

All I could do was fall silent.

While I stared downward, muttering to myself and trying to think of a response, Majima-kun finally spoke.

"I'll let it slide this time. But make sure you tell them. Got it?"

After clicking his tongue loudly, he stomped away.

We could only stand there in stunned silence, watching his retreating figure.

"Majima hasn't changed at all... So, do you think he'll be able to join?"

"Probably. One extra person shouldn't be a problem."

"You need to report it not only to Omiya-san, but to Tenma-sama as well."

Since noble-born Tenma-san would be participating in this dungeon dive, the authority didn't actually lie with commoners like us—it rested with her.

Kaworu emphasized that point, reminding us not to forget it and to be extremely careful in how we treated her.

After all, nobles possessed not only military power but also influence over the judicial system. Making an enemy of one could make life in Japanese society extremely difficult for a commoner.

Tachigi-kun's question about whether Majima could join also carried another meaning.

In reality, the decision would probably depend more on Tenma-san's wishes than on Satsuki's.

Tenma-san was a genuine baron's daughter officially recognized by the government.

However, she wasn't the type to look down on commoners.

More importantly, she was a broad-minded and generous person who didn't concern herself with trivial matters.

The people worth worrying about were the Black Butlers watching over her from the shadows.

Though I supposed there was no way for someone unfamiliar with her to know that.

"Even though she's a noble, she's incredibly kind and easygoing. If you spend some time talking with her while we're exploring together... Hm? Excuse me, do you need something?"

I was confident that sociable Tenma-san would get along with both Kaworu and Tachigi-kun in no time.

Just as I said that and prepared to leave, I noticed a figure cleverly hiding among the pipes protruding from the wall.

Who was that?

When I called out, the person apparently gave up hiding.

Wearing a smile that revealed absolutely nothing about what he was thinking, he boldly stepped out before us.

He was wearing an Adventurer School uniform.

The green necktie identified him as a second-year student.

Ordinarily, seeing another student in uniform wouldn't be strange.

The problem was that I knew this face very well.

Why was he here?

More importantly, why was he wearing a school uniform?

What was he after?

As I suspiciously looked him up and down, someone suddenly tugged on my clothes from the side, nearly making me stumble.

"M-My apologies for blocking your path! (Souta, bow your head!)"

Seeing the golden badge bearing his family crest, Kaworu immediately recognized him as a noble.

She hurriedly pushed my head downward and whispered for me to move aside.

Though honestly, he'd been hiding behind those pipes watching us the whole time, so it wasn't like we'd actually been blocking his path.

Meanwhile, Tachigi-kun apparently recognized him as well.

"You are Mamiya Subaru-sama, correct?"

As expected of the information broker character from DunEx.

Knowing even the names of people outside the main cast was impressive.

But that wasn't the issue.

Why was he here?

When I shot him a look conveying exactly that question, Mamiya smiled and said:

"I'm not suspicious at all, I assure you."

The smile somehow looked even more suspicious.

"I was going to talk to you, but then someone grabbed you by the neck, and I lost the timing to come out. By the way, do you have time right now? I'd like to talk."

"I see. Well, actually, I have plans with these two—"

"I-It's fine! It's not an important appointment! (You can turn us down!)"

According to him, he had happened to spot me while walking home after school and wanted to talk.

Then he saw me getting grabbed by the collar and decided to wait and see what happened.

Was that really true?

I'd only fought alongside Mamiya once during the Tokyo clan party.

We'd never really spoken.

To be honest, I couldn't understand him at all.

Behind that harmless-looking smile, who knew what he was thinking?

Part of me wondered whether he was conducting some kind of infiltration mission while disguised as a student.

Still, he spoke casually even to commoners like me.

And unlike the sort of nobles Kaworu was wary of, he didn't seem to possess any strong sense of superiority.

In a way, he was as rare and safe to interact with as Tenma-san.

That was exactly why I felt comfortable declining his invitation.

But Kaworu immediately reacted in alarm.

Our plan was simply to go look at the equipment her father had made for us.

For me, it was also an important opportunity to strengthen my bond not only with Kaworu but with Tachigi-kun ahead of the curse-breaking event.

Yet Kaworu whispered furiously into my ear:

"Are you insane? You're going to reject a noble's invitation over something that trivial?"

Normally she was a cool girl who rarely showed her emotions.

Watching her panic like this felt surprisingly refreshing.

As I smiled at my childhood friend's unusual behavior, Mamiya boldly made another suggestion.

"In that case, would it be alright if I came along?"

"Eh? Of course, I don't mind at all! (Naoto, I'll leave this to you.)"

"(Understood.) In that case, Mamiya-sama, please allow me to guide you."

Responding to Kaworu's request, Tachigi-kun placed a hand over his chest and offered a perfectly elegant bow.

As someone born into a samurai-class family, he was clearly accustomed to dealing with nobles.

Mamiya nodded with satisfaction, continuing to play the role of an easygoing noble heir.

But I knew better.

The man possessed absurdly powerful abilities.

At first, I'd thought he was just a hopeless fool myself.

I had no idea why someone like him was attending school.

Still, if he wanted to come along, that was fine.

There were things I wanted to ask him as well.

For the past few days, my little sister had been spending a suspicious amount of time with his younger sister.

Who knew what kind of trouble they were getting into?

Maybe the topic he wanted to discuss was related to our sisters.

Regardless of our social standing, we were both older brothers burdened with extraordinarily troublesome younger sisters.

Sharing a few hardships together couldn't hurt.

TL Note- Well.....now Souta will be forced to reveal his power....
