A Room in the Kagune Inn
In one of the rooms at the Kagune Inn, Iris had fallen into a deep slumber.
Her breathing was shallow and quiet.
Her complexion was pale, almost doll-like.
So much so that, at a glance, she could be mistaken for someone who had passed away.
"That doesn't mean..."
"We won't let her die!"
Standing on either side of the bed were Sora and Luna, both continuously using healing magic.
A soft, faint light enveloped Iris gently, warming her body and infusing it with vitality.
However, that glow and warmth failed to stay within Iris's body.
Much like trying to hold water in one's palm, it gradually slipped away.
Eventually, nothing remained.
Empty.
Even so, Sora and Luna refused to give up, persisting in casting their healing magic.
Sweat dripped down their brows, exhaustion building up, their entire bodies overwhelmed with fatigue...
Yet still, they fought desperately to save Iris.
Sora and Luna belonged to the Spiritfolk, who harbored a deep-seated disdain for humans.
Because of that, they felt an especially strong sense of empathy for the Celestials, who had been cruelly mistreated by humans.
Although they had once been forced to fight Iris...
Had it not been for Rain's involvement, they might have joined forces with her instead.
They hadn't had the chance to sit down and have a proper conversation, leaving much unclear.
Still, Sora and Luna had come to think of Iris as one of their own.
And now, she was on the verge of death.
Without their support, it seemed she might slip away at any moment.
Such a fate was unacceptable.
This time, they were determined to ensure Iris found happiness.
And to share endless conversations with her.
With that resolve, Sora and Luna continued casting their healing magic.
However, the prolonged use of magic was taking its toll.
Both their physical stamina and mental fortitude were nearing their limits.
Since nearly every waking moment, apart from eating and sleeping, was devoted to healing Iris, their exhaustion was only natural.
"It's time for a shift change, you two."
"Leave it to us!"
Mille-feuille and Chocolat arrived.
Because Sora and Luna couldn't sustain the healing magic alone, these two, along with Alpha, worked in three shifts to treat Iris.
"Phew... the rest is in your hands."
"Got it—leave it to us!"
As Sora and Luna stepped back, Mille-feuille took over the healing magic.
Chocolat, meanwhile, supported the effort, using potions they'd stocked up on in town and herbal remedies she'd blended herself.
Sora and Luna exited the room and headed into the adjacent one.
"Good work, you two."
"Mhm..."
"This is... getting really tough..."
The sisters flopped onto the bed.
Sprawling out with arms and legs outstretched, they rested their tired bodies in an unguarded, slightly careless manner.
"Y'all are really working hard. You're amazing—both of you. Truly amazing."
Tina, using telekinesis, wiped their sweat away with a towel dampened in cool water.
Once refreshed, it was time to eat.
As the sisters sat up, plates of food and glasses of sweet fruit juice floated gently to their mouths.
"Here, say 'ahh.'"
"Ahh."
"Nom."
Sora and Luna opened their mouths like children and let Tina feed them.
It wasn't laziness—they simply lacked the strength to eat on their own.
Even for the Spiritfolk, known for their magical prowess, maintaining constant use of magic while awake was a grueling ordeal.
The fatigue only compounded, and even rest didn't fully restore their energy.
Still, not sleeping would worsen their condition further, so they slept whenever possible.
"Alright, I'm going to sleep now..."
"Wake me when it's my turn again..."
The sisters collapsed onto the bed, limbs spread out once more.
In less than a minute, the sound of soft, steady breathing filled the room as they drifted off to sleep.
"Really, you’ve been working so hard."
Tina's face softened with care as she extended her hand gently toward the two sisters' cheeks.
Though she was a ghost and unable to physically touch them, she still wanted to reach out to Sora and Luna.
By doing so, she hoped to convey her silent encouragement: Keep going.
"I'm back."
The door to the room opened, and Tania appeared.
There was always the possibility that enemies targeting Iris might show up.
Tania had been on high alert, scouting the area for any suspicious activity.
"Welcome back. Your meal’s ready too."
"Thanks. But… I might not have time to eat."
"What do you mean?"
"Well, how do I put it… it’s hard to explain, but there’s this prickly sensation."
"Prickly?"
"Yeah. Around my horns, I feel this tingling warning me that something’s wrong. Basically… it’s telling me there might be an enemy nearby."
"Seriously? If that’s the case, Rain’s foresight was spot on."
"Well, he is our master. I’d expect nothing less."
"You really love Rain, don’t you, Tania?"
"W-what are you talking about all of a sudden!?"
"Because you said it so proudly, with such a lovestruck tone. You were practically radiating I love him energy!"
"Ugh…"
Tania was completely caught off guard and had no comeback to Tina’s observation.
"...Don’t tell the others about this, okay?"
"Such a shy one, aren’t you?"
"Shut up."
The two exchanged teasing smiles and lighthearted banter.
"...!?"
In the next instant, their expressions sharpened into serious ones.
An ominous and unsettling presence began creeping closer, one that instinctively made their spines tingle.
They moved carefully so as not to wake Sora and Luna, slipping out of the room quietly.
Descending the stairs to the first floor, they exited the inn entirely.
"Now then… what’s going to show up?"
"Hopefully not an enemy… but let’s be real, that’s not likely."
"Whoever’s radiating this much hostility and malice isn’t going to be someone normal."
"Sora and Luna are asleep. Mille-feuille and Chocolat are focused on healing Iris. Alpha is resting up for her shift, so we can’t afford to use her power recklessly. Hmm… aren’t we in quite a pinch?"
"What are you saying?"
Noticing Tina’s wavering tone, Tania gave her a confident smile.
"We’ve got the most powerful species—the Dragonkin—on our side. I’ll drive off whoever comes, no matter who it is."
"Wow, so reliable!"
"Besides, you’re pretty strong yourself, Tina. Spending time with Sora and Luna seems to have boosted your magical energy quite a bit. Honestly, you might be the strongest ghost on the planet now."
"Then I guess I can call myself a member of the strongest species—the Ghostkin?"
"Sure, why not?"
The two shared a quiet laugh, their tension easing in the process.
Relaxed yet prepared, they stood ready to face the source of the overwhelming malice.
And then…
"Greetings. Are the two of you alone right now?"
"You… Monica!"
TL Note- Two Monica?
