The beast tamer exiled from the hero’s party and the cat eared girl from the strongest race meet
Chapter 404: The Mysterious Person
(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)
"Alright, I’ll leave it to you for a while."
Saying this, Rain sat down on a conveniently sized rock. Then, as if focusing intently on something…
With a slight nod, his head drooped, and his body visibly relaxed.
He was probably using what they called assimilation. When I looked up, a single teal duck spun in a circle above us, as if signaling to us. After that, it led the rest of the flock away and flew off.
"That... that’s incredible…"
To transfer one’s consciousness into another creature and control it freely. I can’t believe a human could do something like that.
My mother told me humans have awful personalities, and their souls are rotten. She also said that, despite their lack of significant power, they’re loud and do nothing but yell.
But…
Rain felt different from the humans my mother described. At the very least, his power was genuine. I don’t think it’s normal for a human to use something like assimilation.
"…Hey, you there."
"Huh?"
"Yes, you. The one in the lame, timid-looking outfit."
The human who had teleported us here was glaring at me. Her eyes were incredibly hostile, so much so that I nearly flinched.
Seeing my reaction, her expression became even more menacing.
"You, release us immediately."
"Wh-what?"
"Come on, hurry up and remove these restraints. I might just let you off if you do it now."
W-what’s going on here…? Does this human not realize the position she’s in? She’s restrained and unable to move, but her attitude is so condescending.
"B-but…"
"You! Do you think you can get away with doing this to us?"
"E-er… Am I in big trouble?"
"Of course, you are. Huge trouble. Don’t you know who I am? I’m part of the hero’s party. Do you understand what happens to someone who shows such disrespect to me? Execution. Your head will be chopped clean off!"
"Eek!?"
The vivid imagery made me let out a small scream. Seeing this, the human smirked wickedly, as if pleased with herself.
"Well, I’m not heartless. If you release us right now, I might just let you go. I’m so kind, aren’t I?"
"E-even if you say that…"
W-what should I do?
The fact remains that this human is restrained. By normal reasoning, I hold control of this situation.
But… what if she’s not lying? What if she really is part of the hero’s party, with some extraordinary power? What if she can free herself from these restraints?
In that case, I’d be the one at her mercy. If I defied her here, what might happen to me?
"Ugh…"
This human gave off an intensely unpleasant vibe. It felt like she could snuff out a life without a second thought.
Am I just prey to her?
Scary. Scary. Scary.
But—
"No… no, I can't do that!"
“…Huh?”
“I… I’ve been entrusted with this place by Rain. I… I can’t just abandon that responsibility!”
Rain trusted me to take care of things here. He placed his faith in me.
Why? I sometimes wonder. We’ve only just met, and it’s not like we’ve built the kind of bond where trust comes easily.
But Rain entrusted me with his confidence. I feel I need to live up to that.
“No, I won’t! I absolutely won’t release you!”
“Are you mocking me? I’m telling you to release us! I’m even giving you a chance to walk away unscathed!”
“No! Absolutely not!”
“…You’ll regret this later, I promise. Be ready.”
“Eek!”
The overwhelming malice in her voice made me flinch instinctively.
This human… something’s wrong with her. There’s such an awful, oppressive feeling coming from her that my body is trembling. I almost want to blurt out, "Fine, I’ll release you!"
But I…
“Woof!”
“Huh… Sakura-chan?”
Sakura-chan’s strong bark snapped me back to reality.
“Woof!”
She stood beside me, as if to say I wasn’t alone and she was here with me.
“I… I won’t release you no matter what!”
“Tch.”
With Sakura-chan’s help, I somehow managed not to yield to the human.
“Woof!”
“Huh? What? You’re saying it’s not because of you but because I wanted to live up to Rain’s trust?”
That’s what Sakura-chan seemed to be telling me.
For me to want to live up to a human’s trust… something like that…
Normally, that would be impossible. It shouldn’t even be conceivable. But somehow, that explanation felt right to me.
“Yes… you’re probably right.”
Rain trusted me. He left his defenseless body behind and entrusted me with managing the enemy. That’s not something just anyone would do. Normally, people wouldn’t be able to take such a risk.
We’d only just met, and our relationship was almost adversarial.
But Rain didn’t care about that. He followed his beliefs unwaveringly. That part of him, even though he’s human, I find admirable.
So I want to respond in kind. Just as Rain trusted me… I want to try trusting too. As a first step, I’ll make sure to protect this place.
“Sakura-chan… I’ll do my best, so… will you help me?”
“Woof!”
Sakura-chan barked confidently, as if to say, "Leave it to me."
TL Note- Sakura-chan is the MVP of this chapter......
