Chapter 187 In Prison

(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)

"Damn it!"

In the underground prison of the royal castle, Arios, locked in a cell, vented his frustration by pounding the wall.

Dust and sand fell sporadically.

But that was all.

The sturdy room wouldn't break.

"... How about you calm down?" Aggus, who was thrown into the same room, said.

By the way, Lin and Mina were not there.

Even though it was just for one night, it was deemed inappropriate to put a man and a woman in the same cell.

"Do you think I can stay calm?! Me, the hero, being put in a prison... Damn it, damn, damn, damn! This kind of humiliation, it's the first time in my life!"

Arios trembled his fist and then his face turned red.

After that, he shouted towards the outside of the cell.

"Hey, is anyone there?! Get me out of here immediately! Putting me, the hero, in prison, is that some kind of madness?!"

"Please be quiet, Your Excellency. This is where you belong for now."

Arios glared at the guard with contempt and his anger grew even more.

But the cell was solidly built, and on top of that, there was a barrier that absorbed magical power.

There was nothing he could do.

"The hero has fallen... I'm disappointed."

"Should we just keep him locked up like this?"

"Haha, that's a good idea. Should I propose it to the king later?"

"Damn it!"

Arios slammed the iron bars.

"Hey, Arios. You're making too much noise. Like Aggus said, calm down a bit."

Lin, who was imprisoned in the opposite cell, spoke up.

They couldn't keep a man and a woman together, so they were separated.

Arios glared at Lin through the bars.

"You expect me to stay silent after being treated like this?"

"Well, even I can't accept this, but..."

"But this incident..."

Following Lin, Mina also spoke awkwardly.

"What? What are you trying to say?"

"...This is your responsibility, Arios."

Aggus stated bluntly, and Arios's expression turned grim.

"What do you mean? Is it my fault? Everyone agreed to use that celestial being, didn't they?"

"Yeah, I won't deny that."

"But I haven't heard anything about you killing the adventurer."

"..."

As if hitting a sore spot, Arios inadvertently stopped talking.

"If you were only trying to use the celestial being, we could have somehow managed. We could have made excuses to make the king and his ministers drop their guard... but  you killed the adventurer, there's no excuse anymore. Why did you do such a thing?"

Aggus asked the question, but...

To some extent, he had already anticipated the answer.

Arios was a cautious man.

Or rather, he had a personality that didn't trust others.

Therefore, he must have feared that the adventurer would reveal the incident.

And that's why he chose to silence them.

"...I don't feel the need to tell you."

"Really?"

Arios  evaded the question so Aggus simply responded with a single word.

His expression... was incredibly cold.

"Hey."

From the opposite cell, Lin spoke up.

"I understand that Arios has his own thoughts and all... but killing someone is going too far. It would have been better to just threaten them, you know? Well, even if we talk about it now, it's too late."

"Are you questioning my actions too, Lin?"

"Well, the fact that we ended up like this is largely because we killed the adventurer, right? Honestly, it's because of Arios."

"I also agree with Lin's opinion. I believe there could have been another way, something different."

"Guh."

One by one, his comrades showered him with words of disapproval, and even Arios couldn't help but hesitate.

Then... he realized.

Aggus, Lin, Mina.

They all had cold stares directed at him.

This is your fault.

You did something unnecessary.

Their gazes spoke those words.

"Damn it!"

Arios quickly moved to the makeshift bed and fell asleep as if escaping.

When faced with an unfavorable situation, he would avoid confronting it and run away.

It was a bad habit of Arios.

However, blaming Arios alone was not fair either.

Even though the killing of the adventurer was unexpected...

Aggus and the others had agreed to use Iris.

Whether they were getting their hands dirty or not, it didn't change the fundamental aspect.

They were doing the same thing as Arios, and if they were held responsible, they couldn't escape from it.

But even so...

Aggus and the others refused to face their own guilt by blaming Arios alone.

They averted their eyes, showing an attitude of innocence.

It was a rather hopeless situation.

"...Lin, Mina. Can I talk to you for a moment?"

In a subdued voice, Aggus spoke to the opposite cell, making sure Arios wouldn't hear.

"Hmm? What's up?"

"Have you noticed that Arios has been running wild lately?"

"Well..."

Mina hesitated to answer.

It seemed like she had been thinking the same thing as Aggus.

"He started talking about using the celestial beings, and then he went so far as to kill the adventurer... If we listen to the rumors, it's highly likely that he was also involved when the demons appeared in Horizon."

"Huh, seriously?"

"Lin":

Aggus nodded quietly in response to Lin's surprise.

"I don't know the details, but there's a high possibility that something was going on behind the scenes," Aggus said.

"Why would they do such a thing? The demons are enemies we must defeat," Lin wondered.

"I don't know... But regardless, here's the thing. Arios' recent rampage has been excessive. It's evident enough that he ended up locked in a cell like this," Aggus explained.

"This place is smelly, cramped, and unbearable," Lin complained.

"We don't have time to be halted by things like this," Aggus continued.

The responsibility for Arios being thrown into the cell wasn't solely his, but the party as a whole had issues. However, they seemed unaware of this fact. Lin and Mina wore expressions of weariness, playing the victim card.

"There's no guarantee that the same thing won't happen again in the future. However, we can't keep repeating these events. So... I plan to monitor Arios," Aggus declared.

"Monitor?" Lin questioned.

"Come to think of it, Arios has been acting freely without anyone stopping him. He's been doing whatever he wanted. This is the result. To prevent it from happening again, I'll monitor Arios' actions and intervene when he goes too far," Aggus explained.

"Hmm... Sounds good, right? I think Aggus is capable of handling that. Don't you agree, Mina?" Lin asked.

"Well... It's true that monitoring the actions of the Hero Arios is something I never thought of... but I can understand Aggus' reasoning. I agree," Mina said.

"That settles it then. From now on, I'd like to have discussions without Arios. It'll be reports on the monitoring. Is that fine with you?" Aggus asked.

"Yeah, sure," Lin responded.

"Understood," Mina agreed.

A decision was made that was far from ordinary in a typical party: monitoring the actions of their comrades. There was no sense of camaraderie in this decision. What remained were suspicions, calculations, and self-preservation.

They were one step closer to the dissolution of the party...
