The beast tamer exiled from the hero’s party and the cat eared girl from the strongest race meet
Chapter 411: In the midst of confusion
(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)
"Unyan-nya-nya?!"
Kanade's cat ears and tail bristled, standing on end from tip to tip.
The hand she had slammed against the cell bars was now red.
Of course, that was to be expected.
This cell was designed to imprison their kin—the Phoenix Tribe—who had committed crimes.
It wasn’t something made carelessly; even for the mightiest species, breaking out was nearly impossible.
The structure was that sturdy.
"Oww, it's tingling..."
"A-Are you okay, Kanade? Is your hand swollen?"
"Ugh... it hurts, nya..."
"Kanade, thoughtless."
"Guh."
Kanade's face crumpled as though wounded by Rifa's blunt remark.
Chiffon thought about offering some kind of consolation, but she couldn’t argue with Rifa’s words, which were painfully accurate.
"Kanade, think a little more before you act."
"Ugh..."
"There's someone much better suited for this than us, right?"
"Better suited? …Ah!"
"Yeah. Leave it... to me."
Nina twirled her hand, opening a subspace.
She rummaged around for a moment, and when she pulled her hand out, she was holding a key.
Though the cell was sturdy enough to prevent escape by the mightiest species, it wasn’t equipped with complex mechanisms to seal their powers.
After all, this cell was primarily for minor offenses, like injuring a fellow clan member in a fight. It wasn’t designed to ensure no one could escape under any circumstances.
Thus, Nina could still use her abilities without issue.
Of course, breaking out immediately was an option.
However, without understanding the situation, acting recklessly could make things worse.
For now, they had chosen to bide their time quietly.
"The key... it's open now."
Using the key she had stolen through subspace, Nina unlocked the cell door.
Almost simultaneously, the sound of multiple footsteps approached.
"I heard something!"
"Let's go check it out!"
"Kanade, this is your fault for making unnecessary noise."
"Nyaa… I'm sorry, nya..."
"Don't worry."
Nina's reassurance brought a bit of comfort to Kanade, who had genuinely started to look dejected.
"Anyway… let's get out of here quickly. We need to get to Rain-kun as soon as possible!"
"Roger nya! Nina, hop on!"
"Mm!"
Kanade hoisted Nina onto her shoulders and took off running.
As expected of the Cat Spirit Tribe.
Her leg strength was unparalleled.
She sprinted with such force that she left Chiffon and Rifa behind.
"Fuwaa—!?"
However, the ride wasn’t exactly smooth.
Nina bounced up and down on Kanade’s shoulders, her body jerking with every step.
She seemed a bit nauseous, her face turning pale.
"Hmm... this way! Everyone, follow me!"
When they reached a fork in the path, Kanade paused briefly to think, then decided on a direction and resumed her sprint.
They didn’t encounter any Phoenix Tribe members along the way.
Her keen instincts seemed to guide them away from danger.
"Kanade-san, you’re amazing..."
"Yup, wild instincts."
"Haha... You just called it 'wild' yourself."
"I’m a cat, after all."
While Chiffon and Rifa chatted lightheartedly, Kanade continued to lead the group, running ahead in search of Rain.
Cats may not have noses as sensitive as dogs, but they’re still far sharper than humans.
The person she was searching for was someone she was always with.
And most importantly, someone she loved dearly.
There was no way she wouldn’t find him!
Kanade pressed on, driven by an unusual sense of duty, as she desperately tried to pick up Rain’s scent or presence while moving forward.
“Nya!?”
“Whoa… What’s wrong, Kanade-san? Why did you stop so suddenly?”
“Did you find Rain?”
“Hawawawa…”
“This is…”
With Nina still on her shoulders, looking dazed and dizzy, Kanade's expression grew tense. She stared intently down the dimly lit corridor ahead.
“Is Rain-kun ahead of us?”
“No… I don’t sense Rain’s presence up ahead.”
“Then, what is it?”
“Something bad… I think it’s a monster.”
Rifa asked, and Kanade replied in a sharp, alert tone.
Hearing this, Chiffon frowned in confusion.
“A monster? We’re still on the third level, right? Aren’t monsters supposed to be on the fourth level or below?”
“That’s what I’ve heard… but what’s going on? I can definitely sense something. Hey, Rifa, what do you think?”
“Yeah, I feel the presence of a monster too. Maybe it came up from the lower levels amidst the commotion.”
“Nyaaa…”
Kanade started to worry.
For the Phoenix Tribe, ordinary monsters wouldn’t pose much of a threat.
She didn’t know much about them, but as one of the strongest races, it was hard to imagine their lives being endangered by a mere monster.
However, what if they had a natural enemy, like the Spirit Tribe?
What if a child, too young to fight, encountered the monster?
There was no guarantee of absolute safety.
There was always some way for danger to find its way through.
Through her long adventuring life with Rain, Kanade had learned that lesson well.
“Uu-nyaa…”
Their mission was to find Rain.
Her master’s safety came first.
Because of that, they didn’t have the time or the luxury to get involved in other matters.
But still…
What would Rain think if he knew they ignored the possibility of harm coming to the Phoenix Tribe?
He was kind.
He wouldn’t get angry.
But because he was kind, he would be deeply hurt.
“Kanade.”
“Nina?”
“Let’s go.”
“…Yeah!”
That one word from Nina gave Kanade the push she needed.
Chiffon and Rifa also gave firm nods, signaling their agreement.
Kanade and the others changed direction, heading toward the source of the monster’s presence.
“Eh!? Is this…”
What they saw there was…
