Chapter 511: Demon City

(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)

The animals in the Demon Realm aren’t all that different from those in the Central Continent.

If anything, perhaps because of the large number of monsters, they’re just a little more cautious.

That much isn’t really a problem.

It’s like dealing with a slightly mischievous child…

With some food as a trade, they were willing to cooperate easily.

And so, after about an hour, we managed to find a demon city.

Sora and Luna cast a spell on us, and we immediately infiltrated, but…

“Miss, take a look at this product! See? It’s a fine item, isn’t it?”

“And you know what? My husband, he’s always lying to me, all the time…”

“Ahahaha! This time it’s my turn to run away!”

Demon merchants cheerfully calling out to customers, middle-aged ladies chatting away, children running around with bright smiles.

It was a scene where the only word that came to mind was “peaceful.”

Or rather… what is this?

“…Hey, Sora.”

“…What is it?”

“…Is this really a demon city? Or is there actually a human town here on the Western Continent?”

“…It should be a demon city.”

Sora’s answer was unconvincing.

She’s probably as bewildered as I am.

The same goes for Luna and Yuki.

They looked just as confused, their expressions awkward and uncertain.

“Oh?”

One of the gate guards noticed us.

He didn’t suddenly attack us or anything like that.

But he didn’t let go of his weapon either, staying somewhat cautious.

“Don’t think I’ve seen you before. Where are you from?”

“Ah, um…”

Crap.

I don’t know the geography of the Demon Realm, so I can’t answer that.

Fine then.

It’s do or die.

“From the west…”

“West?”

I avoided giving a specific location and just answered with a direction…

Was that a mistake?

The guard’s face grew tense.

“…I see, so you escaped from the castle too?”

“Huh?”

“The castle’s been on edge lately. Folks like us low-ranking demons don’t have a place there anymore. The higher demons keep picking on us—it’s rough.”

“Ah, yeah… I see.”

“So, you heard rumors about this town?”

“Yeah, just overheard a little, and then we came here.”

“Must’ve been tough, huh? I’m sure a lot happened, but you can relax here. After all, this city is ruled by Lord Zillor. Even the high-ranking demons can’t easily meddle here.”

Zillor? Who’s that?

I didn’t know, but I nodded so I wouldn’t seem suspicious.

“Ah, yeah… that’s reassuring.”

“Here, take this.”

He handed us palm-sized cards.

Not just to me, but to everyone.

“What’s this?”

“A permit to stay in the city. With this, you can enter and even live here without any trouble.”

“That’s generous, but… is it really okay to hand these out so easily?”

“It’s fine. We can’t abandon comrades in need. Besides, to be honest, this city is new, so we’re short on people. The more the merrier.”

“I see.”

“Anything you want to ask?”

“…I heard a rumor about humans being spotted nearby. Do you know anything about that?”

“Humans?”

ChatGPT said:

Upon hearing the word “human,” the gate guard’s demeanor changed.

A slight hint of hostility.

And something else—confusion, like he didn’t want to get involved in trouble.

“Don’t know anything about that… This is the Demon Realm, so you hardly ever see humans here. Are you sure it’s not a mistake? Baseless rumors like that sometimes pop up out of nowhere.”

“I see… Yeah, that makes sense. Got it, thanks.”

“Humans are a savage race that wants to wipe out all demons. Well, I doubt there are any, but… if you happen to see one, report it immediately. And be careful.”

“Understood, I will.”

We were escorted past the gate and into the city.

As we walked through the streets… we finally reached an empty park and let out a long sigh.

“Phew… That was nerve-wracking.”

“But Sora and Luna’s magic is incredible. They seemed to recognize us as demons without question.”

“Hmph! There is nothing impossible for my magic!”

“If you get too cocky, you’ll regret it later. More importantly, Rain—”

“Yeah… this really defied my expectations in so many ways.”

Natural enemies of all living things.

Demons who crave destruction and slaughter.

That’s what demons are supposed to be…

But the demons in this city didn’t seem like that at all.

They looked no different from us humans.

And a few interesting terms came up as well.

High-ranking demons, low-ranking demons.

The castle being on edge.

And the fact that this city isn’t ruled by one of the Four Heavenly Kings, Altera, but by a demon named Zillor.

“I mean… we’ve only just infiltrated the city, and already we’ve gotten so much information.”

“Yeah. I didn’t expect to learn so many intriguing things this quickly…”

Yuki and I both frowned in thought.

The image of demons I had in my mind was that thing we encountered in Horizon.

Something that loved destruction, killing people like it was a game.

Or like Weiss and Reez.

Scheming in the shadows, and ultimately killing people all the same.

That’s what I thought demons were—cruel and inhumane.

But the demons in this city… are they really that cruel?

Are they truly heartless beings with no blood or tears?

I just couldn’t see them that way.

“What the hell is going on here…?”
