Chapter 413: Elfin's Past

(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)

Long ago...

More than several hundred years ago, the Phoenix Tribe maintained a good relationship with humans.

The Phoenix Tribe built their settlement near human towns and interacted with them frequently.
They would help humans who were attacked by monsters...
And, as thanks, they were sometimes invited to feasts.

These feasts were held quite often, and the Phoenix Tribe regularly visited human towns.
The meals weren’t made with luxurious, high-quality ingredients.
They were simple, homemade dishes.

But Elfin loved those homely meals.
She cherished the time spent eating together with smiles all around.
Sometimes, she even learned recipes and cooked alongside the humans.

The Phoenix Tribe... Elfin, loved humans.
It was precisely because of that love that the betrayal was unforgivable.
Betrayed in the worst possible way, her rage burned fiercely.

――――――――――

One day, the Demon King began his assault.

To protect her human friends, Elfin went to battle.
Although she had just given birth to a child, her power was extraordinary and indispensable in the fight.

Above all, she wanted to protect the humans, and so she joined the war.
Of course, she couldn’t bring her newborn son to the battlefield.
She left him in the care of her kin back in the village and departed for war.

The war was long...
The battle against the Demon King lasted for years.

Though it required great sacrifices, they managed to achieve victory.
They protected the humans.
Elfin was overjoyed by this, smiling as she returned to her people.

She planned to report their victory, celebrate with her kin...
And then pour all her love into the son she had left behind.

"I’m sorry for leaving you.
But now, we’ll always be together."

She imagined saying those words, showering him with affection until he grew tired of it.
With those thoughts in mind, Elfin returned to the village, smiling.

And then... she was met with devastation: the village in flames, her kin massacred.

What had happened?
Had they been attacked by monsters?
Confused and panicked, Elfin quickly began to search.

Where was her son?
Her precious son, more important to her than her own life?

Desperately, she searched and searched and searched...
And finally, she found him.

Her beloved son...
His throat had been slashed, his small body lying in a pool of blood. He was already gone.

Nearby, humans—presumably the culprits—were drinking his blood like ravenous beasts.

The prolonged war with the Demon King had left humanity devastated.
Resources were depleted, and there was no food.
In such conditions, maintaining health was nearly impossible, and disease spread like wildfire.

With nothing left to eat, and no hope but to succumb to illness or become prey to beasts, humans grew desperate, terrified, and delusional...
And they began to seek eternal life.

They set their sights on the Phoenix Tribe.
Rumors spread that consuming the flesh of the Phoenix Tribe, who possessed healing powers, would grant immortality.
That drinking their blood would cure any illness or injury.

Of course, it was baseless nonsense.
While the Phoenix Tribe did possess healing abilities, their flesh and blood held no such power.

But the humans didn’t care about verifying the truth.
Even if it meant trampling others, they prioritized their survival.
And so, they trampled the Phoenix Tribe.

The attack began.

The Phoenix Tribe, despite being a powerful race, had sent all its strongest warriors, including Elfin, to fight in the war.
Those left in the village were women, children, and the elderly, with little power to defend themselves.
They couldn’t resist the onslaught of humans who came in droves like a tide of the dead, and they were utterly annihilated.

Among the victims was Elfin’s son.
He had likely been killed alive, his throat cut as he suffered in agony.
His cheeks bore the trails of tears he had shed before his death.

The humans treated his corpse like an object, drinking his blood.
They feasted on it like finding an oasis in the desert.

When they noticed Elfin, they desperately tried to explain, calling it a misunderstanding.

But what is most precious to a mother?
The answer is her child.
For her child, a mother can do anything.
She will not even hesitate to give her life.

And that child had been stolen from her.
In the cruelest way imaginable, betrayed in the worst way possible...
Her irreplaceable child was taken from her.

Elfin’s grief and sorrow at that moment were enough to shatter her heart.
But one emotion kept her from breaking entirely.

That emotion was hatred.

The rage of a mother whose beloved child was stolen burned the foolish humans to ashes.
Carrying her son’s lifeless body, Elfin left the central continent with the few survivors of her people and severed all ties with humanity.

Years passed.
Elfin, devastated by her son’s loss, lived like a shell of her former self for a time.
With her husband’s devoted support and the passage of time, she gradually healed in body and mind.
Eventually, she was blessed with a new child—Finia.
When she held her, Elfin wept tears of joy for the first time in ages.

She never told Finia about her son.
Just recalling those days stirred an uncontrollable murderous rage within her.
She didn’t want to frighten her daughter and kept the secret.
Moreover, she hadn’t fully come to terms with it herself and didn’t know how to explain it.

Years passed since her son’s death.
Time flowed on.

But her anger did not fade.
Her hatred did not diminish.
To this day, her deep anger, hatred, and distrust of humanity remain rooted in her heart.

Will the day come when this anger subsides?
When this hatred fades?
When she can trust humans again?

Sometimes, Elfin wonders about such things...
But each time, the memory of her son reminds her it is impossible.

And so...

Even now, Elfin carries the burning anger, hatred, and sorrow of a mother who lost her child, smoldering deep within her heart.
