Chapter 387: Go through the trials

(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)

We moved to the square in the center of the village.

Chiffon and I stood side by side, facing off against Shigure-san.

Surrounding us were the members of the Wolf Fang Tribe, and cheering us on, were Kanade and the others, shouting, “Do your best!”

“I never expected things would turn out like this…”

They said that if they were going to lend us their strength, we first had to prove our power. We needed to demonstrate that we were worthy of the Wolf Fang Tribe’s support.

That was the conclusion reached in the earlier meeting, and so, as a result, Chiffon and I, being human, were to duel against Shigure-san.

We were to show our strength through battle. It was a situation similar to what had happened with the Spirit Tribe before.

The premise was simple: fight and win. But that didn’t mean it would be easy. After all, our opponent was from one of the strongest species. And moreover, a tribe we had never encountered before. We had no idea how strong they were or what kind of fighting techniques they used.

Therefore, our chances of winning were completely unknown.

But—

"Let’s give it our best, Rain-kun," Chiffon said.

"Yeah!" I replied.

Giving up was not an option. If this was the only way forward, then we would push through without hesitation. No matter what obstacles came our way, we would overcome them.

"Well then... are you ready?" Shigure-san asked calmly.

Maybe it was because we were about to face a fight, but I could feel a sharp aura of battle emanating from her.

She looked quite old, but I knew better than to be fooled by appearances. To represent the Wolf Fang Tribe in combat, she must be incredibly skilled. It wouldn't be surprising if she possessed strength on par with Suz-san.

"I’m ready anytime."

"I'm good too," Chiffon added.

"Then let’s begin. Sakura, give the signal."

"On!" Sakura barked in a high-pitched voice, and the match began.

“Hooo... Haah!”

After taking a deep breath, Shigure-san exhaled forcefully. That seemed to trigger something, as a pale blue flame-like aura began to envelop her body.

"What is that!?"

"This is fighting spirit. I’ll show you how the Wolf Fang Tribe fights," Shigure-san explained, taking a stance with both fists at her waist.

What was she going to do?

Unable to predict her next move, Chiffon and I braced ourselves.

“Haaah!”

Shigure-san thrust both of her fists forward. At the same moment, the blue flame-like aura—her fighting spirit—took shape and shot forward like arrows.

Fast!

I kicked off the ground and leaned my body down to dodge the arrow of fighting spirit. Chiffon reacted similarly, managing to avoid the attack as well.

“Guh!?”

I couldn’t completely avoid it, though, and it grazed me. Just that minor contact sent a shockwave through me, like an explosion of magic at point-blank range. For a moment, I felt like I was about to lose consciousness.

Chiffon, too, seemed to sense how dangerous the attack was, her face tense with fear.

"That was intense... If we had hesitated, we’d be done for in an instant," she said, her voice strained.

"Yeah, it feels a bit unfair that there’s two of us, but... we can’t dwell on that now."

"Right. Let’s give it everything we’ve got."

Chiffon and I nodded at each other, signaling our resolve. Then, we turned our palms toward Shigure-san, ready to face her together.

"Fireball Multishot!"

"Gigavolt!"

Countless flaming spheres and lightning, writhing like a dragon, aimed for Shigure-san. It was a full-powered strike without holding back. I didn’t expect this to win the battle, but I hoped it would at least inflict some damage.

That’s what I thought, but…

"Well then, time for some rapid shots."

Shigure-san once again fired arrows of fighting spirit. They were smaller than the previous ones, but she could fire them in quick succession, completely intercepting all of our attacks.

This was completely unexpected.

Not only could she unleash massive strikes, but she could also shoot rapidly. When it came to long-range attacks, she was practically unbeatable.

In that case, should we switch to close combat?

"...Hmm."

I glanced over at Chiffon, and she gave a slight nod. It seemed like she had the same idea.

"Fireball Multishot!"

Once again, I created multiple fireballs. However, this time, they weren't aimed at Shigure-san. I targeted the area around her, causing the fireballs to hit the ground and kick up a cloud of dust.

It was a simple smokescreen, but it was better than nothing.

Chiffon and I each drew our weapons and charged into the dust cloud. We couldn’t see her, but we remembered her approximate position.

We rushed towards that direction... but Shigure-san was nowhere to be found.

Panicking, we looked around, but she wasn’t there.

"Huh? Where did she go…?"

"This is...!? Chiffon, above us!"

"Huh!?"

Feeling an intense pressure from directly above, I looked up to see Shigure-san flying freely through the air, cloaked in her fighting spirit.

"...No way."

Chiffon was stunned, and I was probably wearing the same expression. I had heard that cloaking oneself in fighting spirit could enable various abilities, but I never imagined it would allow someone to fly.

Wait, isn't that cheating?

"Come on, now’s not the time to be surprised."

Shigure-san grinned confidently as she began firing arrows of fighting spirit down from the sky.

TL Note- Shigure-san is OP......
