Chapter 174: The Sudden Turn
(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)
One week has passed...
Sora and Luna have completed their special training. The two of them were able to successfully learn the sealing magic.
As promised, they were also able to receive an item from the Chief.
It was called the "Crimson Tear", a deep red gemstone that shone with a transparent brilliance.
It was not just an ordinary gemstone, but something that could be used as a catalyst for magic.
The Chief gave his approval, saying that it would be a suitable vessel for sealing Iris.
With the sealing magic learned and the necessary item obtained, everything was now ready.
"Thank you very much," they said.
They then moved towards the entrance that connected the inside and outside of the village.
They bowed their heads to Al and the Chief who had come to see them off.
"Due to the matters concerning this village, I cannot go with you, but if it is you two, you will surely be able to accomplish it. I pray for your success," said the Chief.
"I don't care what happens to humans, but do your best. Since you're taking the treasure of the spirit village, you better produce some decent results," said Al.
"Yes," they replied.
They received encouragement from the two, which helped them to become even more motivated.
"We will definitely stop Iris," they said.
"Aye, that's the spirit!" replied Al.
As the two were seeing off the group, the Chief called out to them, "Rain, was it?"
They stopped their steps and turned back.
"Yes?"
"If you ever lose sight of your position, come back to this village. I may be able to answer the questions you have at that time."
"Um...what do you mean?" he asked.
"If you don't understand now, then it's not the right time. Just remember these words," said the Chief
Losing sight of their position...what kind of situation would that be?
Although he didn't quite understand, it was a message from the Chief of the spirit village.
It must have some deeper meaning.
He engraved those words firmly in his heart.
――――――――――
They left the cave and moved to the ruins of the village of Pagos.
"Hmm, it feels like it's been a while," Kanade stretched her back with a "gugu".
Everyone else seemed to be feeling the same way, enjoying the feeling of fresh air on their skin.
"So what are we going to do now?"
"Of course, we're going to find Iris and seal her away."
"Where could Iris be?" Tania asked, scanning the area lightly.
Of course, they didn't find Iris. Only dilapidated houses lined the area, and there was no one else around except for them.
"Could she still be hiding somewhere?"
"I don't know... it's been a week since we last fought her, so it wouldn't be strange if she had started to move again."
Although they had inflicted some injuries on her when they last fought, someone as powerful as Iris, the strongest of her kind, would have likely healed completely in a week.
Thinking that way, it wouldn't be strange if she had already resumed her activities. They might not have much time left.
"For now, let's go to the village of Jisu. It should be the front line now, and we can hear more about the situation."
"Okay."
"Is that good for everyone?"
"Roger!"
Everyone nodded in agreement, so they headed to the village of Jisu.
――――――――――
As they hurried on their journey, they arrived at the village of Jisu in about half a day.
The village was unchanged from before... No, that's not quite right.
"There are fewer people...?"
Aside from the original villagers of Jisu and those who had fled from Pagos, they occasionally saw adventurers here and there...
But they couldn't spot any sign of the demon-slaying party.
There were so many of them.
There's no way they could all fit inside the houses, they should be camping outside...
But they couldn't see any tents pitched.
A bad feeling crept up on them.
"Excuse me, can I ask you something?"
They spoke to an adventurer stationed at the entrance of the village.
"Did Iris's... demon-slaying party come here? Where are they?"
"Huh? You don't know?"
The adventurer's answer confirmed their worst fears.
"There's a ruin to the east of here where demons were discovered. The party left the village to defeat them."
Just as they suspected!
"When did this happen!?"
"Huh? About half a day ago..."
"I see... Thank you for telling us!"
They cut the conversation short and returned to where everyone was.
"Did you find Iris?"
"She's apparently at the eastern ruins. But it seems the demon-slaying party has already set out, half a day ahead of us."
In response to Tania's question, he replied, including a sense of urgency.
"Uh, that's not good! Nyau~"
"How far is it from here to the ruins...?"
"I heard before that it's about a day's journey."
In response to Nina's question, Tina answered while rattling the lid of the kettle.
"If it's a day's journey, we might still make it if we hurry..."
"Yeah, if we hurry, we might be able to catch up!"
"Everyone, let's head out of the village for now."
It seemed they had some sort of plan.
Prompted by Tania, they moved out of the village, away from prying eyes.
"What are you going to do?"
"This."
Tania's body began to glow, surrounded by light.
Gradually, the light grew brighter and brighter...
When the light exploded, a huge dragon appeared before them.
"Nyau... is that you, Tania?"
"Get on my back!"
Tania barked the command.
"I see... This way, we might be able to catch up to the demon-slaying party."
"However... Mmm, it's hard to ride. Tania, don't you have seats or something?"
"I'm not a carriage."
Sora and Luna immediately scrambled onto Tania's back.
Then Nina and Tina did the same.
After that, the protagonist climbed on.
Finally, Kanade got on Tania's back.
"Everyone, hold on tight!"
Tania flapped her huge wings and suddenly took off into the sky.
"Ah!"
It was fast.
It was like they were slicing through the wind, and if they let their guard down, they'd be thrown off.
But this was the only way...
But at this speed, it's not impossible to catch up with the hunting party. There is just a glimmer of hope.
"I'm counting on you, Tania!"
"Hehe, leave it to me... huh!? Everyone, hold on tight!"
Tania warned in a voice tinged with a sense of danger.
Reflexively, everyone clung to Tania's scales.
Tania made a sudden turn in midair.
Immediately after that...
A beam of light raced through the spot where they had just been.
"What happened!?"
"That was...!"
Looking down, they saw the figures of Axe and Cel.
