Chapter 277 Secret talk in the dark night

(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)

"I'm back." Iris said as she returned to a certain mansion.

Inside the mansion, not a single sound could be heard. There was no light, and the moonlight streaming in from the windows was the only source of illumination. Darkness seemed to crawl around, creating an eerie scene.

"Hehe, welcome back," a figure appeared, as if the condensed darkness itself. It was Reez, a demon who worked in the shadows to assist Iris.

"Monica told me you helped Rain Shroud. Any issues?" Reez asked.

"I haven't heard of any problems," Iris replied.

"Good, there are no issues. What I aim for is to establish an equal relationship with you. Unless you do something extremely reckless, we won't restrict your actions," Reez pledged.

"I thought I might get scolded, but... it seems I can't quite read your actions," Iris said, puzzled by Reez's unusually cheerful demeanor.

"Hehe, consider it a little victory on my part," Reez chuckled.

Seeing smirking Reez, Iris continued, "I have a question for you."

"Sure, what is it?" Reez asked.

"Why are you so cheerful? I helped Rain-sama, and you aided in defeating the hero supported by the angels. Yet, you seem pleased. Why?" Iris inquired.

"I don't mind answering that question... Iris, you probably already have a good idea, don't you?" Reez responded.

"If you say so, then my assumptions are correct," Iris said.

"Shall we confirm it?" Reez snapped his fingers, and chairs and a table appeared from nowhere. Wine and fruits were placed on the table.

"Please excuse me," Iris said, taking a seat and tasting the juicy fruit. Despite Reez's assurance that there was no poison, she couldn't help but feel a bit suspicious.

"In the recent incident, Rain-sama's reputation soared, and the hero's fame plummeted. Initially, I thought you aimed to weaken the hero, the enemy of the Demon King. However, your actions are more intricate. Rather than swiftly killing him, why go through such elaborate schemes?" Iris asked.

"Oh? Iris-san has quite an extreme imagination," Reez teased.

Ignoring the comment, Iris continued, "You don't intend to kill the hero. So, what is your true goal? To turn him into an ally, right?"

"Hehe... Correct," Reez praised. "As you said, my goal is to turn the hero into an ally."

"That hero is... well, not the best person, but even so, I can't imagine him having such a twisted mindset to become an ally of the demons," Iris remarked.

"That's exactly why I want him to fall," Reez explained. "Arios may have a far-from-saintly personality, but he's a hero. And he's human. Normally, he would never ally with demons."

"But now, how is it?" Reez asked.

Stripped of his hero status, sentenced to death, and fallen to the lowest point... the only one Arios could rely on was Monica. Arios genuinely believed that this situation was all Rain's fault, and Iris resentment towards him intensified.

In a way, Arios was in a state of rampage. There was no expectation of rational thinking.

If Monica managed to manipulate and control him...

It was possible for him to become an ally of the demons.

Understanding Reez's plan, Iris sighed. "Did you cause such a commotion just to bring down the hero?"

"Of course. Humanity's strongest turned into the worst enemy overnight. Don't you find it an interesting scenario?" Reez asked.

"It's in bad taste," Iris commented.

"Hehe, that's a compliment for me," Reez laughed cheerfully. The plan seemed to be going well, as reported by Monica. Arios was steadily falling. Crossing the decisive line where he could never return to the human side was just a matter of time.

"I can't help it."

Like the pieces of a puzzle clicking perfectly into place, her plan is unfolding just as she envisioned it. The sense of accomplishment was even giving Reez a feeling of ecstasy.

"Why did you get involved with Rain-sama halfway?"

"That human is quite a dangerous existence. Not as much as Arios-san, but he carries fairly potent blood. Moreover, he commands multiple strongest species. It's quite troublesome to deal with as an enemy. In fact, there were instances where revived demons when confronting him were immediately defeated, so to speak."

"He defeated me too."

"Yes. From the demon's perspective, he's the next troublesome opponent after Arios-san. So, I considered eliminating him if possible..."

"That's the reason for getting involved in the incident in the capital?"

"Correct."

However... with a pause, Reez continued speaking.

"After all, the main dish is Arios-san. Bringing him down is the primary goal. If I fail, then eliminating Rain-san is the next step. That's how I was thinking."

"I see..."

"Since I succeeded in bringing down Arios-san, I left Rain-san alone for now. Being too greedy might lead to failure. Since I achieved the top priority goal, I'm satisfied with this for now... that's the feeling."

Prioritize bringing down Arios rather than getting rid of Rain? Is it because Arios has purer divine blood?

To let Rain go for such a reason...

Unexpectedly, Reez might be a bit careless. Iris thought so.

Certainly, Arios might have purer blood.

However, the real threat is Rain.

One would understand that once they confront each other. Rain possesses power surpassing Arios.

Reez made the wrong choice. Now would have been the time to target Rain instead of Arios. The true enemy for the demons would undoubtedly be Rain... or so Iris believed.

However...

Even if she thought that way, Iris had no intention of telling Reez about it. There was the fact that she hadn't decided whether to become an ally yet, but even more importantly, Iris wouldn't betray Rain. Absolutely not.

Rain risked his life to stop her rampage. He showed her the warmth of humanity.

Although Iris had made many mistakes, she didn't think she had fallen so low as to sell her benefactor.

"Well, let's leave the talk about Arios-san here. Although it's almost a success... we haven't reached the final stage yet. Continued observation is still necessary... So, I won't be too happy now. Laughing it off later saying 'Oops, failed after all' would be awkward."

"If I were to voice my opinion, it seems there's a possibility of failure..."

"I won't deny that. Nothing is certain in life. However, even if we fail, it's not a big deal."

"And... what does that mean?"

"There are other uses for Arios-san aside from becoming our comrade. Let's leave it at that for now. The details will be discussed when Iris-san becomes our ally."

"I see..."

It's natural, but it seems she's not completely trusted yet. Iris felt that anew and tightened her resolve.

After that, Reez stood up and extended a hand to Iris.

"Iris-san, won't you tell us your answer soon? Won't you join us in annihilating humanity?"

"I..."

"...Phew. It seems like you're still undecided."

Seeing Iris hesitating with her words, Reez wore a troubled expression. However, he quickly switched to a smile.

"Well, I won't rush you or pressure you. It can't go on forever, but I'll patiently wait."

"That would be appreciated."

"But... would you mind granting me a little favor?"

TL Note- Iris is on good camp or evil or on both? Hoped you enjoyed your Christmas Holiday.
