-- Kaworu Hayase's POV

I usually try to arrive at school five minutes before morning homeroom, but today is a special day. Today is a special day, and I'm planning to come to school early.

It's the day that Yuma will be representing Class E against Class D.

It's still fresh in my mind that my classmates, who had dreams and hopes for life at the Adventurer's School, were thrown into a desperate situation when they learned about the position of Class E at the recent club activity recruitment ceremony. It was rare that they were able to get back on their feet right away. There are many classmates who are still depressed, and class E is filled with a pathetic sense of sadness and a sense of stagnation with no foreseeable future.

That's why we can't afford to lose. We can't afford to be underestimated and underestimated by the other classes any longer, not only to let them know that even Class E does it when it counts, but also so that we can move forward with pride.

For the past month, I've been staying up late in the dungeons hunting monsters. When I'm at school, I train to fight against others. I've done everything I could, including strategy meetings in between. Still, I can't shake my anxiety, and I tend to fall into negative thoughts. At times like this, I remember my tough training and simulate it.

I know that this Kariya guy is no ordinary person, because he was emitting a considerable "aura". He is also a higher level than the current youma. He is also a famous swordsman among first-year students, and he is sure to put up a high-level fight that no student in Class E has ever experienced.

If you're going to take on such an opponent, you can't just sit back and do nothing. In addition to improving one's own level, one must thoroughly study the styles and tactics of one's opponents in order to pave the way for victory.

Although I have been practicing kendo since I was a child, I have never had a real fight with a greatsword user. However, adventurers are taking the world by storm in this day and age. If you look for it, you can find videos of greatsword fighters on the Internet. We all watch them and study them.

The weight and spacing of a daisen is very different from that of an ordinary one-handed sword. In kendo, there is a tactic of placing the shinai right in the midline of the opponent's body and closing the distance until you are in striking distance.

However, due to the large size and heavy weight of the sword, many of the attacks are swinging, and it is easy to get caught in the gap. Therefore, the style that Yuma should take against Kariya will inevitably be a counter style.

The first thing to do is to watch Kariya's movements and find out what kind of offensive patterns and habits he has. In order to do that, he has to move around constantly to prevent Kariya from getting his position and timing.

Once you know the pattern to some extent, go for the gaps in the attack. In addition, you should not only aim for the opening, but also invite the attacker to move to create it. For the counter style, it is important to stand around and increase the speed of your strikes.

In the E class, I have no idea how to use a big sword that matches Yuma's ability, so I used a big sword to practice with, but honestly, I'm not confident that it went well. Even though my level has risen and my body has been greatly strengthened, it turns out that wielding a metal weapon of nearly 10 kg requires a certain amount of technical skill.

Even though my physical strength has increased, my weight has not, so wielding a heavy weapon will make my center of gravity wobble. It is very difficult to maintain a stable center of gravity while wielding a large sword in a fight with a fast-moving opponent.

Even if you had the physical strength to hold a 100kg weapon in one hand, you would end up being swung around by yourself if you tried to swing it.

Therefore, wielding a heavy weapon requires strength, skill, and experience to resist its inertia. If you slow down your swinging speed to stabilize your center of gravity, you will be easily countered, and if you speed up, the inertia will increase and you will be swung around. It was a continuous learning process for me as I fought with Yuma.

I kept practicing with my hands every day, checking the videos of my movements and making countermeasures, and I think I managed to formulate a plan. Yuma also said that he was able to grasp the feeling of dealing with a big sword, so I'm happy if I was able to help him in some way.

 But not everything was perfect.

First of all, Yuma hadn't experienced the impact of a big sword properly. Even though it was just a little bit of practice, I couldn't let him get injured. Weapons used in duels have their blades crushed, but if they are r, they can still be dangerous. And even more so against a superior opponent.

Also, his level didn't go up as much as he thought it would. For some reason, I couldn't find Kariya's level in the database on my terminal, but based on the amount of aura he had at the entrance ceremony, he was around level 10. Moreover, he must have the [Fighter] skill. We just barely made it to the job change, but we couldn't get the skills for the basic job.

Dealing with the weapon skills was also a problem. They would probably use a sword skill called "Slash. I couldn't unleash it myself, so I just watched the video repeatedly and visualized it.

Although there are negative elements like this, there are also enough positives to outweigh them. Yuma has an initial skill with tremendous performance called "Swordsmanship Mastery" that raises the level of his swordsmanship talent. He also has a great sense and intuition for interpersonal combat.

And against Kariya, he has a secret plan. If he can get it right, he is sure to win. Yuma also showed confidence that he could handle it, so he should be fine. I'm a friend of his, so why don't I believe him?

--I've been simulating the battle with the greatswords over and over again, anxiously telling myself that it would be okay, and I've been feeling the lack of sleep. No matter what I think, nothing is going to change now. All I can do is send Yuma off with a smile so that he can face the duel with confidence.

I tied my long hair up high, checked my appearance, and went to pick up Sota for the day. It's only a ten-second walk across the street from my house, but I'm going to pick him up.

There is a rather old signboard with the words "Zakka Shop Narumi" written in black letters on a yellow background. When I press the chime of the Narumi house at the bottom of the sign, a light rhythmic sound rings out.

"Good morning. I'm here to pick up Sota.

"Oh, Kaworu-chan. Please wait a moment~"

The cheerful aunt Narumi shouted from the bottom of the stairs, "Sota~Kaworu-chan is here~" as usual. Perhaps it was because I came a little early to pick him up, but I passed by Sota's sister, Hanano-chan. I smiled and called out to her.

"Hanano, good morning."

"Oh, hi, ......."

I wanted to stand there and talk to her, but she just said a few words, gave me a slight bow, and left immediately. It's not just that she was in a hurry,......, it's also that she hated me. She only made eye contact with me for a moment.

I was feeling a little depressed when Sota came lumbering down the stairs, sighing. I guess he doesn't remember what day it is, and his face is really not tense. I'm not expecting anything from him, so I don't really care.

"Let's go, then.

"Sure."

As usual, I lead the way to school, with Sota following slightly behind. We don't have anything in particular to talk about, so we usually keep silent. But today, I have something to ask.

"By the way, I saw ......."

"What?"

It was yesterday evening. I was looking out the window in a daze, thinking about today's duel, when I spotted Sota and Hanano walking by. That's when--

"You were wearing black colored armor. ......"

"Black? Oh, the werewolf breastplate.

Yes, the leather armor made from the drops of the black wolves on the sixth floor of the Demon Wolf. It is a major item for intermediate adventurers. To tell the truth, I also had each part of the werewolf armor in order to conquer the dungeon. I'm not going to look at the fact that Sota was wearing it as he struggled against the slime. ......

"Why was ...... Hanano-chan wearing that armor too?"

"......"

I heard that Hanano-chan is currently in the third year of junior high school and will be taking the adventurer school exam next year. She is not allowed to enter dungeons yet, but for some reason she was wearing armor for dungeon combat. There was no way she would wear something as heavy as a werewolf's gauntlet or breastplate as her everyday clothes. What was the meaning of this?

When I tried to ask him about it, Sota swept his gaze and turned his head in the direction of the day after tomorrow as if to deceive me. In addition, he started whistling a scathing tune.

"...... Stop fooling around with that lousy whistle."

"Buhi!"

"Are you hiding something?

"Oh, actually, ......."

He still tries to give explanations that are not to the point. "He said, "She's going to take the exam next year, so it's okay to have it now," or "She saw me wearing it and wanted it. "It may not be nothing, but it's a painful excuse.

Then why was a weapon hanging on Hanano-chan's waist ......?"

"………… Buhi”

(TL: A reader already predicted this somewhat in the comments in one the previous chapters)

Sota is sweaty, but I know that this sweat is cold and this face is a face that is trying to hide something. It hasn't changed since the old days. It's a shame that you think your poker face will succeed in hiding your emotions when something happens.

"Ah! It's Omiya-san! Good morning!"

"Oh, Narumi-kun? Um, good morning. ......"

Sota spotted Omiya-san, who happened to be walking in front of him, and hurriedly ran to her. ...... He ran away.

Omiya-san is kind to everyone and intelligent, and she is an excellent student who can lead the class in a different way than Yuma. That being the case, I was curious as to why he spent so much time with Sota. At first I thought she just saw that Sota was being avoided by his classmates and approached him out of pity, but that wasn't the case.

(Why did she bounce my advice off ......?

(TL: Because she has a brain that works)

I once warned Omiya-san and the others that Sota was a bad person and they should stay away from him. And yet, I still see them talking to him in the classroom.

I wonder if their view of Sota was a bit blind. Or has Sota actually changed since he entered the school?

(I think he has changed. ......)

It's obvious that he's lost more weight than he did before he entered the school. I'm not sure what to make of this. It's an event that should be called a shakeup if you think about it.

But the way he cheated and ran away was still the usual Sota.
