Chapter 556 Unfinished Mission

(TL:By Rafael,valhallatls.blogspot.com)

So this is the Wolf Civilization’s wormhole expansion device…

Nie Yun carefully stared at the sundial-shaped structure displayed on the screen. In his mind, its appearance model and all kinds of parameters were already being reconstructed.

But just this much was far from enough for Nie Yun to deduce any useful information.

He shifted his attention to the two battlefields.

From Gemini’s tactical-sharing platform, it was clear that the two fleets had encountered unprecedentedly fierce resistance. Casualty numbers were jumping by the dozens every second.

Thanks to the early warning, the Bronze Legion’s interception arrived just in time, fearlessly stopping the two Gemini fleets from getting any closer for direct bombardment.

Even so, Gemini warships occasionally managed to use their ultra-long-range main cannons to shell the target, and the accompanying drones and mecha units were breaking through defenses regardless of cost.

“Bang! Bang! Bang!” Ripples spread out in circles, causing the energy circuits of Wormhole Expansion Device No. 2 to become increasingly unstable.

This battlefield was the closest to the target. Under Gemini’s attack—completely ignoring casualties—it was inevitable that the fighting would spill over. Device No. 2 was now in grave danger.

For some reason—perhaps some kind of interference—even No. 1, which had not been attacked, revealed its main body, and together with No. 3 began showing signs of unstable operation.

Good! Keep attacking like this! I don’t believe their defensive field can withstand this kind of assault forever!” Seeing the results, the Gemini frontline commander at Battlefield 2 shouted excitedly.

Sir, our outer defensive circle is in critical condition. If the formation breaks, the situation will turn against us!

Have everyone hold the line! Once we destroy the target, we immediately break through and retreat!

Yes, sir!

At this moment, on the Wolf Civilization’s side—

Chief, at this rate, the enemy’s attacks will soon reach our defensive limit!” the adjutant said anxiously.

Order all Silver-grade officers and above to join the battle!” the old clan chief gritted his teeth.

But… if we do that, our elite forces may suffer significant losses.

Of course I know! But the wormhole expansion devices cannot be lost! Give the order!

Yes!

Very soon, behind the Bronze Legion, dozens of silver flashes burst forward and shot into the battlefield.

Look! What is that?

Enemy’s new type of mecha detected—the speed… it’s too fast… No! Boom! Zzzzzz…

Where are they? Radar can’t lock onto them!

Sir, Group 3 has lost contact… zzzzzz…

Within Gemini’s fleet formation, dozens of silver streaks moved like lightning, wildly tearing apart what had been a fairly solid formation. They ripped open one defensive gap after another in the outer perimeter. Massive numbers of Bronze warriors followed close behind, widening the breaches and beginning a tidal assault on the Gemini fleet.

In an instant, the Gemini fleet fell into increasing disorder, and casualties were rising at an alarming rate.

Seeing this, the frontline commander responsible for destroying Target No. 2 showed a changing expression.

The battle around Target No. 3 already had little suspense. Friendly forces were too far away, and after the Bronze Legion’s desperate blockade, they were completely unable to advance. Their threat to the target was rapidly diminishing instead.

Compared to the other fronts, this battlefield had the highest chance of achieving its strategic objective, and Gilard had already issued a death order—if the target wasn’t destroyed, he wouldn’t need to return for debriefing.

As Gilard’s trusted subordinate, he knew he had no choice left.

Order the fleet: full acceleration! Maximum close-range firepower! Even if we have to ram it, we will destroy the target!

On the other side, as a vassal race, the Ryan tribe also could not afford to bear the Wolf Civilization’s wrath if the wormhole expansion device was destroyed.

Both sides had no retreat. The battle grew more and more brutal.

This place became the focal point of the tug-of-war…

Two full hours later—

Tsk, tsk… truly a miserable sight…” Nie Yun sighed inwardly.

The No. 2 battlefield was now littered with wreckage. Gemini’s forces were almost completely annihilated. Countless warship fragments stood like tombstones, and over a hundred thousand Gemini warriors were buried in the sea of stars.

The Wolf side looked no better—only a pitiful handful remained, barely securing a tragic victory.

But this was Wolf Civilization’s home turf; large reinforcements were already rushing over, strengthening the defenses around the wormhole expansion device.

Yes—Gemini still failed!

In the end, they could not completely destroy the mission objective.

But the No. 2 device had suffered heavy damage. On the sundial-shaped circular base, seven or eight massive cracks were spewing smoke, most of the energy circuits extinguished, making the entire thing look miserable.

Device No. 2 was essentially paralyzed. The triangular symmetric-charging system had collapsed, forcing the other two devices to halt operation as well.

After verification by Gemini’s scientific team, the wormhole had indeed stopped expanding—there were even faint signs of contraction.

But a partial success was still not a complete success. It was heavily damaged, not destroyed. Who knew whether the enemy could repair it?

It was easy to imagine how depressed Gilard must have felt—after painstaking scheming, staging a surprise counterattack, and paying such a heavy price, only to end up with such an unsatisfying and awkward result.

The other Gemini fleet responsible for Target No. 3 withdrew early once they saw the situation was hopeless, but still paid a terrible price—over half their forces lost.

These were Gilard’s elite troops—all top-tier warriors of the Sea Clan. Losing so many of them at once made his heart bleed.

Purely from casualties, Gemini Civilization had still come out ahead; with better preparation and a surprise attack, they seized a considerable advantage.

They destroyed most of the Wolf Civilization’s defensive structures and even forced the agile Bronze Legion to abandon their mobility advantage, forcing them into a clumsy, improvised defensive battle.

After this battle, the Ryan tribe’s elite mecha forces lost nearly sixty to seventy percent, and even their precious Silver-grade officers suffered significant casualties. Their vitality was severely damaged.

But the great flaw remained—they failed to completely destroy even one of the enemy’s strategic facilities. This heavily discounted the value of their “victory.”

Both sides suffered heavy losses. They each regrouped, staring at each other from a safe distance.

Seeing the enemy adopting a defensive posture, Gilard knew he couldn’t gain any further advantage today. Reluctantly, he ordered the legions to gather surviving soldiers.

After collecting a batch of enemy weapon debris as trophies, he led the fleet through the wormhole, slowly withdrawing toward the Storm Star System…

Three hours later—

At the tip of the spindle-shaped hive, a striking—one might even say flamboyant—golden starship hovered lightly like a dragonfly touching water.

The ship was about five kilometers long, its sleek hull decorated with countless crystals and gemstones, shimmering brilliantly.

There were no insignias on the vessel, but at the bow stood a figurehead—a golden wolf howling at the sky, radiating majesty and dominance.

Rather than a battleship, it looked more like a luxurious yacht—gaudy, extravagant, and giving off a strong air of nouveau riche arrogance.

Inside the bridge of this ostentatious golden vessel—

Useless trash! Idiots! Swine!” Spittle flying, an obese, fur-covered man was furiously berating the old clan chief kneeling on one knee before him.

Do you know how expensive this β-type wormhole charging system is?! Even if I sold all of you, you still couldn’t pay it back! Do you understand, you useless scum?!” he shouted, kicking and punching as he ranted.

His short, chubby limbs hammered repeatedly on the old clan chief’s sturdy body, making him tremble slightly.

Despite the humiliation, the old clan chief remained kneeling, head lowered, silently enduring it all, his eyes cold and dead like stagnant water…
